WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and WiFi 6E have been shipping in enterprise products for several years now. The vendor marketing promises dramatic improvements — higher throughput, better density handling, lower latency. The reality is more nuanced. Whether WiFi 6 is the right investment for your enterprise depends on factors most upgrade discussions skip over.
What WiFi 6 actually improves
The headline throughput numbers (up to 9.6 Gbps theoretical) are largely irrelevant for typical enterprise use. The real improvements are in density handling and efficiency. OFDMA allows a single access point to communicate with multiple devices simultaneously rather than sequentially, which dramatically improves performance in environments with many concurrent connections. Target Wake Time reduces power consumption for IoT devices. WPA3 is meaningfully more secure than WPA2.
When the upgrade is genuinely worth it
High-density environments (training rooms, lecture halls, open-plan offices with 100+ users per AP) see immediate and measurable improvements. Environments with significant IoT deployment (sensors, smart building systems, asset tracking) benefit from the efficiency gains. Organizations with heavy video conferencing usage often see noticeable improvement in call quality. If your current WiFi generates user complaints during peak times, WiFi 6 will likely fix them.
When you can safely wait
Low-density office environments with WiFi that already performs adequately rarely justify the cost of a full refresh on technology grounds alone. WiFi 5 (802.11ac Wave 2) infrastructure deployed in the last 4 to 5 years is still genuinely capable for typical office workloads. The refresh decision in these environments should be driven by hardware lifecycle and warranty expiry, not by WiFi 6 marketing.
What to plan for
WiFi 6 access points require more PoE power than WiFi 5 (typically PoE+ minimum, sometimes PoE++). Many existing switch infrastructures cannot supply this without an upgrade. The full benefit of WiFi 6 also requires WiFi 6 client devices — if your laptop fleet is still WiFi 5, you will not see the density benefits. Factor switch upgrades and a realistic client-device timeline into your TCO before committing to a refresh.
